  • Tools & Utilities
Intel FPGA Admission Webhook is a Kubernetes admission controller for cluster administrators that validates Intel field-programmable gate array (FPGA) device plugin resources and enforces policy before workloads use FPGA accelerators. It helps teams safely and consistently expose FPGA devices in Kubernetes clusters.

First-install notes

  • Install cert-manager first Run the provided Helm command to install cert-manager, including its CRDs (custom resource definitions), before starting the admission webhook. It creates and manages the TLS certificates a Kubernetes webhook needs, so without it the webhook may not start or API calls can fail with certificate errors. source
  • Deploy NFD and NodeFeatureRules Apply the NFD and node-feature-rules kubectl commands after substituting the release version. NFD (Node Feature Discovery) labels nodes with hardware features, and NodeFeatureRules turns those into usable labels, so the cluster can find nodes that actually have the device instead of scheduling workloads to useless nodes. source

Common questions

Do I need to install cert-manager before deploying the Intel FPGA admission webhook?

Yes. Install cert-manager, including its CRDs, before starting the webhook because it creates and manages the TLS certificates the webhook needs. Without it the webhook may not start or API calls can fail with certificate errors.

What should I deploy so the cluster can schedule FPGA workloads to nodes with FPGA hardware?

Deploy Node Feature Discovery and NodeFeatureRules after substituting the release version. NFD labels nodes with hardware features, and NodeFeatureRules turns those into usable labels so the cluster can find nodes that actually have the device.

How does the webhook translate requested FPGA function IDs?

It maps user-friendly function IDs to the Interface ID and Bitstream ID required for FPGA programming. This is done for the FPGA OCI createRuntime hook.

Where is the admission webhook container image published?

Intel publishes the image intel/intel-fpga-admissionwebhook on Docker Hub.
