First-install notes

  • Start the server with docker compose From the mumble folder, run docker compose up -d; Docker Compose is a tool that starts your containers (packaged apps) from project files. This starts the Mumble server in the background, and skipping it means clients cannot connect. source
  • Set LDAP variables before starting login If you are adding LDAP login (directory-based authentication), set the LDAP_* variables in your compose file (the settings file for Docker Compose) before starting. The entrypoint turns them into LDAPauth.ini and starts the plugin, so missing variables can block user logins. source
  • Keep ACME certificate files with right permissions If you enable automatic HTTPS (ACME), let the script place the certificate and private key in /data/acme/mumble.crt and /data/acme/mumble.key and keep ownership set to PUID/PGID (the user and group IDs the container runs as). Moving them or changing permissions can stop Mumble from reading the key and break secure connections. source

Common questions

What should I do before starting Mumble with Docker Compose if I want LDAP login?

Set the LDAP_* variables in your compose file before starting the container. The entrypoint converts them to LDAPauth.ini and starts the plugin, so missing variables can block user logins.

Where should Mumble store ACME certificate files and what permissions do they need?

Keep the certificate and private key at /data/acme/mumble.crt and /data/acme/mumble.key. Keep ownership set to the container PUID and PGID, because moving them or changing permissions can stop Mumble from reading the key.

How can I keep a home-hosted Mumble server private for friends and family?

Bind the server to a Tailscale IP so only people on your Tailscale network can connect.

Does adding a new Mumble server create a local server for friends to join?

No. Adding a new server is not the same as creating a server. If you do not have a server yet, you need to self-host or create one for the group.
