First-install notes

  • Set your database details in .env Before starting, edit the .env file, where CodeIgniter keeps main settings, and set the database hostname, database name, username, and password to match your setup. Without this, CodeIgniter can't connect to your database, so anything that saves or reads data will break. source
  • Create a safe sessions folder Create the writable/sessions folder, set its permissions to 0700, and make it owned by the web server user, such as www-data. If this folder is missing or has the wrong permissions, users may not stay logged in and the app may show errors. source
  • Serve only the public folder Point your web server's document root, the folder shown to visitors, to the public folder instead of the whole CodeIgniter folder. If visitors can reach the full app folder, they may be able to access private settings or files that should not be exposed. source

Common questions

How should I configure the web server or reverse proxy for CodeIgniter 4?

Point the web server to the public folder instead of the whole project. Pointing at the project root can expose private settings and framework files.

Where do I set the database connection details?

Edit the .env file and set the database hostname, database name, username, and password. Without these values, data saving and reading will fail.

What permissions should the sessions folder have?

Create the writable/sessions folder, set it to 0700, and make it owned by the web server user such as www-data. Wrong permissions can cause login and session errors.

Where can I find help if the installation does not work?

Use the troubleshooting guide for common installation problems and suggested workarounds. It also covers how to check whether the install is working.

What web security protections are built in?

CodeIgniter includes built-in protection against CSRF and XSS attacks. Version 4 adds context-sensitive escaping and content security policy.
