Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install Docker before anything else On Ubuntu, install Docker, Docker Compose (the tool that starts multiple containers), and Git, then enable the Docker service. If Docker isn't running, your MusicBrainz stack can't start or stay running. source
  • Create the music database first Run `docker compose run --rm musicbrainz createdb.sh -fetch` to build the database from the latest full export. Without this, the app may start but will not have music data to search. source
  • Expose the web app on port 5000 The web server inside the container listens on port 5000, so map that port from the container to your computer in Docker Compose. Without it, the app can run but you won't be able to open the website in a browser. source

Common questions

If I expose a self-hosted MusicBrainz instance for tagging, which port should I map?

Map the container's port 5000 to your host because the web server inside the container listens on port 5000. Without exposing it, the website won't be reachable in a browser.

How can I keep a Picard-tagged library easy to maintain in media servers?

Organize the collection so Picard-tagged files remain easy to maintain and playable in Kodi or Plex, while preserving the original files.

Can Picard identify audio files that have no metadata?

Yes. Picard can use AcoustID audio fingerprints to identify files by the actual music, even when they have no metadata.

How can I add a feature that Picard does not include by default?

You can choose from available Picard plugins or write your own plugin for the feature you need.

Where should I post Picard-specific questions?

Use the MusicBrainz community Picard category for questions, suggestions, tagger scripts, naming schemes, and plugin recommendations, but check the Picard FAQ first.
