First-install notes

  • Install the Open vSwitch packages On Debian or Ubuntu, install the openvswitch-switch and openvswitch-common .deb packages, ideally using apt-get so dependencies install automatically. Without these files, the Open vSwitch commands will not exist and you cannot create virtual bridges. source
  • Start the Open vSwitch daemon After installation, start the main background program, ovs-vswitchd, so Open vSwitch can apply your bridges, ports, and traffic rules. If it is not running, virtual switches will not forward packets and your network setup may appear dead. source
