A production-ready OpenStreetMap tile server running inside a single Docker container. Includes PostgreSQL, osm2pgsql, renderd, and Apache. FIRST RUN: Set Post Arguments to [import] and place your .osm.pbf file in the OSM Data path before starting. After import completes, change Post Arguments to [run] and restart. Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Point the server at the app's .wsgi file Create a .wsgi file in wsgi-bin that imports the Flask app (the Python web framework the app uses) and assigns it to application; if needed, add the app's folder to sys.path so Python can find it. Without this entry point, the web server can't start the app, so the tile server won't work. source

Common questions

How do I perform the initial map import in this Docker container?

Create a Docker volume, mount your .osm.pbf file as /data/region.osm.pbf, and run the container with import. Once the container exits without errors, run the container with run to start serving tiles.

Which Docker volume contains the map database?

The PostgreSQL database is stored in the osm-data Docker volume. That volume contains the imported OpenStreetMap data.

Can the tile server run on an isolated machine?

The run process does not require internet access, but the import process does. For an isolated system, import on an internet-connected machine, export the osm-data volume as a tarfile, and restore it on the target machine.

How do I enable automatic updates for a regional PBF?

Reference both the .osm.pbf and .poly files during import and set UPDATES=enabled. If you only have the .osm.pbf file and no .poly file, do not enable automatic updates.

Can the container download the map files instead of me mounting them?

Yes, the DOWNLOAD_PBF and DOWNLOAD_POLY parameters let the container download the files for you.
