Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install Bark from GitHub, not pip install bark Use the official GitHub install method instead of the plain package name, because pip install bark can pull the wrong program and cause missing model or import errors. This gets the actual Bark code you need before you start any server setup. source
  • Install the matching Transformers library Install the Hugging Face Transformers library from its main branch before running Bark, since Bark needs that newer library to load its speech models. Without it, startup may fail with missing or incompatible module messages. source
  • Turn on small-model mode for limited hardware If your computer does not have a large graphics card (GPU), set SUNO_USE_SMALL_MODELS=true and SUNO_OFFLOAD_CPU=true before launching Bark. This tells Bark to use smaller models and move some work to the normal processor, reducing the chance of out-of-memory crashes and very slow first runs. source

Common questions

Do I need an Apple Developer account or APNs key to self-host the backend?

No. The Bark iOS app is free on the App Store, and bark-server ships with the credentials needed to send pushes.

How can I verify the server is running before adding clients?

Call the ping endpoint on the listening address, for example localhost:8080/ping.

Where does Bark-Server store its data?

It uses /data by default, so the process needs write permission there. If needed, use the -d option to choose another data directory.

Does the server talk directly to iOS devices or through Apple?

It receives HTTP API requests and forwards them to Apple Push Notification Service, which then delivers the notifications to iOS devices.

Can I trigger notifications from scripts or automation?

Yes. The server exposes a simple API for sending notifications, which can be integrated into scripts, automation tools, or custom applications.
