FilmCraft is a native non-linear video editor written in pure Rust, providing source and program monitors, a real timeline, and every trim mode — down to its own codecs. It is built for people who know Adobe Premiere Pro: the same panels, workspaces, tools and shortcuts, so your hands already know where everything is. Underneath, it is new from the bitstream up. The H.264, HEVC, ProRes and AAC codecs are our own, written in Rust from the public specifications. A GPU compositor works in linear light. Frame math runs on exact integer time, so edits never drift. And every action in the app is a command that an AI agent can drive as precisely as you can.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Start the desktop app with the demo Run the FilmCraft desktop app first; it opens with a demo project so you can check the timeline, clips, and basic editing tools. If the demo starts, the core app is working before you try imports or extra servers. source
  • Control server uses local port 9876 Use control mode when you need a JSON-lines control server on local port 9876, where each line sends one JSON command. If an automation tool expects it, it will fail without it, but do not expose the port publicly because it can send commands to the app. source
  • MCP server is optional The headless MCP server is a no-window helper for AI tools that use MCP; use it only when connecting an assistant or automation client. If that client expects it but it is not running, the client will not be able to control FilmCraft. source

Common questions

Before importing media or adding extra servers, how can I confirm FilmCraft is working?

Start the desktop app first; it opens with a demo project so you can check the timeline, clips, and basic editing tools. If the demo starts, the core app is working before you try imports or extra servers.

What local port does the FilmCraft control server use, and should it be exposed publicly?

The control server runs on local port 9876 and accepts one JSON command per line. Do not expose the port publicly because it can send commands to the app.

Has FilmCraft had a Windows launch issue related to GPU support?

Some users report FilmCraft 0.5.0 and 0.4.0 portable x64 failing to launch on Windows 10 with an Intel UHD Graphics 620. The headless CLI works without GPU init.
