Posta is an open-source, self-hosted email platform: HTTP API for sending and receiving email, SMTP pools, templates, campaigns, tracking, webhooks, inbound mail, and OIDC/SSO. Posta is a self-hosted, developer-first email platform that handles outbound, inbound, and relayed email — driven by a single HTTP API, with SMTP available for the paths that need it. It is designed as a fully self-hostable alternative to services like SendGrid, Mailgun, and Postmark — giving you complete ownership of your email infrastructure, data, and deliverability.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Fill in .env before starting Posta Set the database, Redis, admin login, and JWT secret (the long random key used to sign login tokens) in the .env file before you start the server. If these are blank or wrong, Posta may fail to start, refuse logins, or behave insecurely. source
  • Open port 9000 for the API Keep the server port setting (POSTA_PORT) reachable, with 9000 used in the example, so your browser or app can talk to the Posta API and dashboard. If the port is blocked or pointed at the wrong place, the UI and API requests will not connect. source
  • Have PostgreSQL and Redis ready Posta expects a PostgreSQL database and a Redis service reachable using the .env values, such as localhost:5432 and localhost:6379. If either is stopped or unreachable, the server cannot store settings or process background work. source

Common questions

What must be set in the .env file before starting Posta?

Set the database, Redis, admin login, and JWT secret in the .env file before starting the server. If these are blank or wrong, Posta may fail to start, refuse logins, or behave insecurely.

What port must be reachable for Posta's API and dashboard?

Keep the POSTA_PORT reachable, with 9000 used in the example. If the port is blocked or pointed at the wrong place, UI and API requests will not connect.

Can I migrate existing SMTP senders to Posta without rewriting them?

You can point an existing SMTP client at Posta as a relay, and the mail uses the same outbound pipeline as the API. That lets you move to the HTTP API at your own pace.

How can my app receive inbound email from Posta?

Posta has a built-in SMTP receiver with TLS and an HTTP webhook ingest with HMAC verification. It stores raw messages, headers, and attachments, and can forward them with status tracking.
