A family tree you host yourself. Each person gets photos, videos, voice recordings and stories. Relatives open the tree from a link without an account, and can suggest additions that the owner approves. This container runs everything (PostgreSQL, API, web app) and needs no setup. It creates its database and keys in the appdata folder on first start.

What files and environment variables must I set before starting Parenthèse with Docker?

You need Docker with the Compose plugin and a .env file with POSTGRES_PASSWORD and JWT_SECRET. The password may contain letters and digits only, and the JWT secret should be a long random key.

Do relatives need to create an account to view the tree?

No. You share a tree link and a sharing password, and relatives open it directly without an account.

How can I approve or control suggestions made by family members?

The owner can choose whether family changes apply right away or go through a review queue. In the queue, each suggested change can be approved or declined.

Can I import or export family tree data from other genealogy programs?

Yes, Parenthèse supports GEDCOM import and export. The export includes people and their links, but not the media files.

What types of media can be attached to each person?

You can add photos, videos as a file or YouTube link, audio recordings, documents, and GPS tracks.

How do I choose the interface language?

The app follows the browser language, with English and French available. You can switch it in the app or force a language with a lang parameter in the address.
