Nexpaper is a lightweight self-hosted alternative to Paperless-ngx for households and small businesses, designed to file, search, and share documents in one container without Redis, Celery, or Postgres. It imports existing Paperless-ngx data and accepts new documents from the browser, phones, scanners, or mailboxes; converts scans into searchable PDFs while preserving originals; and lets users edit, version, search, and share documents through personal or shared vaults.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

Common questions

How should I expose nexpaper if I need access away from home?

Keep it on your own network and reach it through a VPN. The example Docker compose publishes only 127.0.0.1:8560 to container port 8000.

What should I back up?

Back up the /data volume. The documents are stored as plain files under /data/dokumente.

Can I migrate an existing Paperless-ngx setup?

Yes, nexpaper has an import that reads from a Paperless-ngx server and takes over what you already have. It is independent of Paperless-ngx and only reads from it during import.

What authentication options are available?

It supports second factor, passkeys, and sign-in through your own provider. There is also a checklist in the settings for checking this.

What Docker capabilities are needed?

The example uses no-new-privileges, drops ALL capabilities, and adds only CHOWN, DAC_READ_SEARCH, SETUID, and SETGID. It sets the owner of /data and drops from root to the nexpaper user.

Can I integrate nexpaper with my own tools?

Yes, everything the web app does is available through an open API at /api/v1.
