First-install notes
- Install the rpk tools first Use the docs' install commands to get the rpk CLI (Redpanda's command-line tool), Python 3, and jq, then run rpk connect install. If these are missing, the Connect installer can't run and you won't be able to create your first stream. source
- Start the Docker setup if you use it If you're using the provided Docker Compose setup, make sure Docker (a tool that runs apps in isolated containers) is running and start the services in the background with docker-compose up -d. Docker Compose starts a group of services together, so this brings up Redpanda and Grafana; without it, Connect has nothing to connect to and you won't see the dashboard. source
- Finish Salesforce setup in the browser If you're connecting to Salesforce, open the Connected App URL printed by the setup script in your browser. That page lets you give Redpanda Connect permission (a Connected App is Salesforce's way of allowing another app to access your org), and without it you can't access your Salesforce data. source

Common questions
What must be installed before running the Connect installer?
Install the rpk CLI, Python 3, and jq before running rpk connect install. If those are missing, the installer cannot run and you cannot create your first stream.
How do I start the provided Docker Compose setup for Connect?
Ensure Docker is running, then start the services in the background with docker-compose up -d. This brings up Redpanda and Grafana so Connect has something to connect to and the dashboard is visible.
What must I do in the browser after starting Salesforce setup?
Open the Connected App URL printed by the setup script and grant Redpanda Connect permission. Without that authorization, Salesforce data cannot be accessed.
What common self-hosted deployment areas should I check when something fails?
Check pod failures, storage problems, network connectivity, and node synchronization errors. These are the self-hosted troubleshooting areas listed in the source.
