First-install notes

  • Set up the database before first login Fill in the database connection details in Roundcube's config, then run the database initialization step. If you skip it, Roundcube cannot create or use its needed tables for mail folders, preferences, or contacts, so login and setup will break. source
  • Map each mail domain to its own config If you will serve more than one email domain, set include_host_config (a Roundcube setting that says which config file to use for each web host name) so each host name points to its own config file. Without that mapping, all domains share one config and may use the wrong mail settings. source
  • Add LDAP address book setup if needed If you want LDAP (a directory service for contacts/users) address books, install the required packages and run the setup script before enabling them in Roundcube. Without that, contact searches will fail because the directory structure and connection settings are missing. source

Common questions

How do I point a Dockerized Roundcube at my IMAP and SMTP servers?

Set ROUNDCUBEMAIL_DEFAULT_HOST to your IMAP host and ROUNDCUBEMAIL_SMTP_SERVER to your SMTP host. Prefix the host with tls:// for STARTTLS or ssl:// for SSL/TLS encrypted connections.

Which ports should I expose for Roundcube and its mail connections?

The Docker example publishes container port 80 as host port 8000 for the web UI. IMAP defaults to port 143 and SMTP defaults to port 587, with environment variables available to change them.

Which Docker tags should I use if I want ongoing updates?

Use the latest-* tags, which contain the latest stable Roundcube release and updated PHP base images. Full version tags are not updated after release.

Can users log in without typing the full email address?

Yes, set ROUNDCUBEMAIL_USERNAME_DOMAIN to append a domain to user names during login.

Does Roundcube support PGP encryption?

Yes, Roundcube provides support for PGP encryption.
