First-install notes

  • Set default download options first Before starting downloads, set global yt-dlp options (the downloader MeTube uses) and presets in your config, such as subtitle language or a speed limit. This keeps every download consistent and avoids surprises like missing subtitles or a bandwidth limit you did not want. source
  • Start pending downloads After adding videos, use the start action to move them from pending into the active queue. Without this step, the videos stay waiting and MeTube will not download them. source
  • Keep the queue state file safe The app keeps its queue in a small JSON (text) file, so store it in a folder that survives restarts and back it up. If it is lost, pending and saved downloads can disappear. source

Common questions

What Docker port and volume should I map for MeTube?

Map port 8081 and mount a host directory to /downloads. The Docker Compose example uses 8081:8081 and /downloads.

How do I ensure MeTube creates files with the right ownership in Docker?

Set PUID and PGID to the user and group you want MeTube to write files as. CHOWN_DIRS can be left true so MeTube makes that user/group the owner of the download, state, and temp directories at startup.

How do I limit how many downloads run at the same time?

Use MAX_CONCURRENT_DOWNLOADS. The default is 3, and any extra downloads wait their turn.

How do I clean up the Completed list and delete downloaded files?

CLEAR_COMPLETED_AFTER removes finished and failed entries from Completed after the specified seconds, with 0 keeping them forever. DELETE_FILE_ON_TRASHCAN controls whether the file is deleted when the Completed entry is removed, and ask prompts each time.

Can MeTube automatically check channels or playlists for new uploads?

Yes. MeTube supports subscriptions to channels and playlists, which queue new uploads as they appear. The default check interval is 60 minutes.

Does MeTube do anything after the download finishes?

Its scope is deliberately narrow: it downloads well and stops once the file is written.
