OpenTodo is an open-source, local-first task manager you host in a single small container, with every device syncing from one copy of your data. It organises tasks into projects, sections and boards, supports recurring tasks, reminders, sharing, CalDAV calendar access and an optional AI assistant, and imports from Todoist, Things, TickTick and Linear. A good fit for self-hosters who want a fast, offline-capable todo app with no telemetry and no subscription.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • HTTPS and reverse proxy OpenTodo serves plain HTTP on port 8080 and expects a reverse proxy to terminate TLS; push notifications, passkeys and end-to-end encryption require HTTPS. Set OPENTODO_BASE_URL to your public https URL so cookies are marked Secure and invitation links point at the public address. source
  • Creating the owner account Open the Web UI and the first visitor creates the owner account; everything else besides the HTTPS-dependent features works on the server's plain address. source

Common questions

Do I need a reverse proxy and certificate for all features?

No. Only installing the app, push notifications, passkeys, and end-to-end encryption require HTTPS behind a reverse proxy. Everything else works from the server address.

How is the owner account created?

Open the Web UI and the first visitor creates the owner account.

Can I import tasks from other task apps?

Yes, it can import from Todoist, Things, TickTick, and Linear.

Do I need a hosted account to try or self-host it?

No, it is not offered as a hosted service. You can use the demo, join a server someone you know runs, or run your own.

How do I use it offline on a phone?

Add OpenTodo to the home screen on iPhone, iPad, or Android. It opens in its own window, works offline, and can show reminders.
