Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install with the Docker script On a 64-bit Linux computer with Docker (the container system used to run the app) version 20.10 or newer, download install.sh, make it executable with chmod +x install.sh, and run ./install.sh install. This creates the .env settings file and starts the containers; without it, AliasVault has nothing to run. source
  • Lock down admin access after install After the first install, run ./install.sh configure-admin-access to set who or what can use the admin controls. This prevents unknown people or devices from changing AliasVault's security settings. source
  • Add HTTPS if you use it on the web If AliasVault will be reachable from the internet, run ./install.sh configure-ssl to start Let's Encrypt, a service that issues secure web certificates. This gives visitors HTTPS instead of plain, less secure web access. source

Common questions

How do I restrict admin controls after first installing AliasVault?

Run ./install.sh configure-admin-access after the initial install to set who or what can use the admin controls. This helps prevent unknown people or devices from changing AliasVault's security settings.

How do I add HTTPS to a self-hosted AliasVault server that is reachable from the internet?

Run ./install.sh configure-ssl to start Let's Encrypt and issue secure web certificates. This gives visitors HTTPS instead of plain web access.

What Docker deployment options are available for self-hosting AliasVault?

AliasVault can be self-hosted on your own infrastructure with Docker using a managed install script or a single all-in-one container.

Where do emails sent to an AliasVault email alias go?

Emails sent to the virtual email addresses are handled by AliasVault's built-in email server and appear in the AliasVault app. No third-party email service is required.

Can I view and edit my AliasVault vault offline?

Yes, AliasVault supports offline access with local editing in the browser extension and mobile apps. Changes sync automatically when you are back online.
