Vigilant Vole is a lightweight, self-hosted uptime monitor for homelabs that checks services, sends alerts, and publishes status pages. It is written in Rust, runs as a small Docker image (about 18 MB compressed, a few MB of RAM) or single binary, and supports HTTP(S), TCP, ping, DNS, push/heartbeat, Docker, WebSocket, TLS, certificate and domain expiry, NTP, Steam game servers, PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, Redis, MQTT, Kafka, RabbitMQ, gRPC, SMTP, RADIUS, and SNMP monitors, plus groups. Alerts can use built-in services such as Discord, Slack, Telegram, email, ntfy, Gotify, Pushover, Teams, Matrix, and PagerDuty, or Apprise for 90+ additional services, with retries, reminders, escalation, and flap detection. It also includes public status pages with custom domains, incidents, badges, maintenance windows, multi-user roles with two-factor login, and remote probe agents.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

Common questions

Do real browser checks require a browser inside the main container?

No, the browser runs as a separate headless Chromium container, such as browserless or chromedp/headless-shell.

What authentication methods can HTTP monitors use?

HTTP checks can use basic auth, OAuth2 client credentials, or a client certificate.

How do remote agents affect outage alerts?

Checks can run from other networks, and alerts are only sent when the remote agents confirm the outage.

How many notification providers are built in?

There are 24 built-in notification providers, and Apprise can support 90+ additional services.
