Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

Common questions

Can I start Mosquitto without a configuration file for a quick test?

Yes. Running just mosquitto starts a local, anonymous broker that is only useful for initial testing. Use a configuration file with a listener and authentication for clients on other computers.

Can Mosquitto be fronted by HAProxy for TLS termination?

Yes. The documentation includes guidance for using Mosquitto with HAProxy, including deployments where HAProxy performs TLS termination.

What should I expect when building Mosquitto from source?

The build requires cJSON. Use CMake on Windows and Mac or make on other platforms, and use make binary when building from git to skip building man pages.

What common MQTT gateway failures should I check when clients cannot connect?

Check TLS certificate issues, topic mismatches, broker connectivity problems, and DNS errors.
