Portabase Dashboard is a self-hosted dashboard for backing up and restoring database instances. It monitors database agents, shows backup status, and lets you restore data from previous backups. It suits self-hosters who need lightweight database protection without full VM or enterprise backup platforms.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install with a generated project secret Use the documented Helm (a Kubernetes package installer) command, which creates a random project.secret before installing. If that secret is not generated, the project may be misconfigured and the installation may not work as expected. source
  • Link each database to a project Make sure each database is linked to a project before you try to open its details. If it is not linked, the API returns a 403 error, so the dashboard may not be able to show that database's details. source
  • Check status to confirm agent contact After setup, look at the database status to see the last contact time, latest backup, and whether a backup is still waiting. This helps you confirm the agent is still connected and that backups are not stuck before you rely on the dashboard. source

Alternatives (2)

  • Veeam Backup & Replication - Veeam Backup works with both standalone ESXi and Hyper-V hosts, as well as with large virtual deployments.
  • databasement - Databasement is a self-hosted web application for scheduling, storing, and restoring database backups.

Common questions

Do I need to open inbound ports from the Portabase Dashboard server to my database hosts?

No. The central server does not contact agents directly; agents periodically contact the central server.

What Helm prerequisite can prevent the Portabase installation from working correctly?

Use the documented Helm command that creates a random project.secret before installing. If that secret is not generated, the project may be misconfigured and the installation may not work as expected.

Why might the Portabase dashboard fail to show a database's details?

Each database must be linked to a project before its details are opened. If it is not linked, the API returns a 403 error, so the dashboard may not be able to show that database's details.

Can Portabase authenticate users through external identity providers?

Yes. Portabase supports OIDC and OAuth2 authentication connectors, allowing one or more external identity providers.

Which database engines supported by Portabase can be restored?

Restore is supported for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, SQLite, Firebird, MSSQL Server, and Docker Volume. Redis and Valkey are backed up, but restore is not supported.
