Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

Resources & Compatibility

Requirements not published yet.

First-install notes

  • App installs need a token and HTTPS link If you add apps through the Technitium DNS API, send your access token in the Authorization header (formatted as Bearer plus your token) and make the app zip URL start with https://. Missing the token or using a non-HTTPS link makes the install request fail. source
  • Give the token Apps: Delete permission The account or token used to install apps needs the Apps: Delete permission, or the server will block the install even if the zip file is correct. source
  • Keep app settings as valid JSON If you customize an app such as Default Records, follow the example JSON format, including fields like enableDefaultRecords and defaultTtl. Malformed JSON can cause the app to fail to load or ignore your settings. source
  • Use the web console after install Technitium DNS Server works out of the box with no or minimal configuration and provides a user-friendly web console accessible from any modern browser. source

Common questions

Do I need to run Unbound separately for recursive DNS with Technitium?

No. Technitium includes built-in recursive resolution, so you do not need to install Unbound separately.

Can Technitium provide DoH or DoT without an external DNS proxy?

Yes. It has built-in DoH and DoT support that can be configured directly from the GUI, so cloudflared is not required.

Can Technitium also serve as my network DHCP server?

Yes. Technitium includes a built-in DHCP server.

Which Docker image should I use for Technitium DNS?

Use the official technitium/dns-server:latest image. The project provides a docker-compose.yml example to create and edit the container for your deployment.

What common cluster setting mistake should I avoid when running two Technitium DNS nodes?

A reported issue was putting the real internal DNS namespace/domain in the cluster configuration. The author identified that misunderstanding as the problem behind name resolution across the two nodes.
