First-install notes
- Install the CouchDB package first On Debian or Ubuntu, run the provided apt commands to install Apache CouchDB. If you skip this, the app is not installed, so you cannot start it or create databases. source
- Know where your data and logs live The example shows CouchDB stores database files in /var/lib/couchdb and keeps logs in /var/log/couchdb/couch.log. Treat that folder like important data: if it is deleted, moved, or not backed up, your databases can be lost. source
- Use port 5984 to reach CouchDB The example config listens on port 5984 for browser/API access to CouchDB. If that port is blocked by your firewall or network, you will not be able to open the admin web page or connect to the database. source
