First-install notes

  • Fill in wger.env before starting In your wger.env settings file, set ALLOWED_HOSTS to your site address, add a long random DJANGO_SECRET_KEY (a secret string the app uses to secure sessions), and enter the database login details. If these are missing or wrong, wger and the background scheduler may fail to start or may be unable to reach the database. source
  • Create the database first Install PostgreSQL (the database program that stores users, workouts, and settings) and create a database and user named wger with a password. If the database is missing or the credentials do not match, wger has nowhere to save data and will fail to start. source
  • Start the Celery Beat timer Run celery -A wger beat -l INFO in the same wger setup to start Celery Beat, which is the scheduler that runs background jobs at set times. Without it, scheduled tasks will not happen even if the web app is running. source

Common questions

What command starts the wger periodic-task scheduler, and what happens if it is not running?

Run celery -A wger beat -l INFO in the same wger setup to start Celery Beat. Without it, scheduled tasks will not happen even if the web app is running.

How should the scheduler be kept running in a production deployment?

It should be properly daemonized as a service. One documented option is a systemd service file.

Which environment and database settings must be correct before starting the scheduler?

Set ALLOWED_HOSTS, a long random DJANGO_SECRET_KEY, and database login details in wger.env. Also create a PostgreSQL database and user named wger with a password. If these are missing or wrong, wger and the background scheduler may fail to start or reach the database.

What does the community say about running it with Portainer?

One self-hoster was trying to put the wger app on Portainer and reported having issues, but the source does not provide a working guide.
