Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Point dataDir to a safe, backed-up folder In zoo.cfg, set dataDir to the folder where ZooKeeper stores its state. If this folder is lost, deleted, or fills up, ZooKeeper can lose tracked information and stop working correctly. source
  • Confirm start and mode with status After ./zkServer.sh start, run ./zkServer.sh status to see which config file it used and whether the Mode is standalone or part of a cluster. If the mode or config looks wrong, clients may be pointed to the wrong node. source
  • Use foreground mode to see startup errors If the server exits or won’t stay running, start it with ./zkServer.sh start-foreground so its messages appear directly. That makes it much easier to spot missing settings or permission problems. source

Common questions

Which ZooKeeper folder do I need to back up?

In zoo.cfg, point dataDir to a safe, backed-up folder. If that folder is lost, deleted, or fills up, ZooKeeper can lose tracked information and stop working correctly.

How can I diagnose ZooKeeper if it exits immediately?

Start it with ./zkServer.sh start-foreground so startup messages appear directly. That makes it easier to spot missing settings or permission problems.

Can the same zoo.cfg be used on every node in a cluster?

Yes. The ZooKeeper configuration file is designed so the exact same file can be used by all the servers, assuming the disk layouts are the same.

Which Apache ZooKeeper download should I use to run it?

Use the bin archive if you only want to run it, because it contains the jars required to run ZooKeeper. The non-bin archive is for building from source with Maven.
