DesignCraft Web is a community-maintained Docker image that serves DesignCraft, a page layout and publishing design application, through a browser-based WebAssembly interface. It provides a self-hosted way to access the upstream design editor from a modern browser. The container only serves the static web application through NGINX; it does not provide a remote Linux desktop or a server-side design backend.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Try the sample on first run Start the app with the sample magazine to check the install works before adding automation. If this fails, the command-line (CLI) tools and chat-app controls usually will not work either. source
  • Open port 7979 for control If you enable the control channel (--control 7979), allow that local port on trusted devices only so outside programs can send commands to the running app. If the port is blocked, outside tools cannot connect and automation will not work. source
  • Fix the MCP tool path In the MCP (the standard that lets chat apps like Claude run tools) server JSON, replace /path/to/designcraft-cli with the real location of the designcraft-cli program file. If the path is wrong, Claude cannot start DesignCraft. source

Common questions

Can the browser editor open InDesign-compatible files?

Yes, guides for the online editor cover opening IDML and INDD files.

Can it export print-ready PDFs for professional publishing?

It produces PDFs with selectable text, embedded fonts, CMYK and spot colors, bleed, crop marks, and archival PDF/A output.

Can DesignCraft be driven by automation or an MCP server?

Yes. Every menu item, tool, panel, and dialog can be driven over a JSON control channel and an MCP server.

Does the app require a subscription, license server, or telemetry?

No, it is described as having no subscription, no licence server, and no telemetry.

Can a self-hoster use it directly from a web browser?

Yes, DesignCraft is presented as a page-layout app that runs in the browser.
