MaterialCraft is an open-source, node-based procedural material designer that assembles tileable physically based rendering (PBR) textures from noises, patterns and filters in a live node graph with 2D and 3D previews. It runs natively on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, and in the browser via WebAssembly, which a community-maintained Docker image lets you self-host. Aimed at texture and material artists who need to create and export map sets for any engine, the container serves the static web app only, with no server-side rendering or centralized project storage.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Set WebAssembly and JavaScript file types When hosting materialcraft-web, your web server should send .wasm as application/wasm and .js as text/javascript. Without those file types, the browser may refuse to load the WebAssembly code and the app will not start. source
  • Cache assets, but keep index.html fresh Set long-lived caching for hashed asset files and no-cache for index.html. That avoids your browser loading an old startup file after an update, which can make the app behave like an older version or fail to find matching files. source
  • Give embedded iframes fullscreen and clipboard If you embed the app in an iframe, size the iframe and include allow='fullscreen; clipboard-read; clipboard-write' with allowfullscreen. Without those, browsers may block fullscreen or copying/pasting inside the material designer. source
  • Download and install For native use, download the prebuilt installer for macOS, Windows, Linux or FreeBSD from the GitHub releases page and install it; for browser use, run the community Docker image and open the served web application in a browser. source

Common questions

Does MaterialCraft have a browser-based interface?

Yes. It runs in the browser via WebAssembly.

Are MaterialCraft project files lossless?

Yes, the project files are lossless.

Which material maps and image formats can it export?

It exports base color, normal, roughness, metallic, height, and ambient occlusion as PNG, JPEG, TGA, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, EXR, or HDR at 8, 16, or 32 bits.

Can it be controlled by a CLI, JSON channel, or MCP server?

Yes, every menu item is a command, so a CLI, a JSON control channel, and an MCP server can build materials.
