Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install the UniFi command-line tool Install unifi-cli with pip (a Python installer) or cargo (a Rust installer) so your computer has the program. Without it, you cannot enter the UniFi controller settings or open the dashboard. source
  • Enter your controller address and API key Run `unifi config init` and enter your UniFi controller address (its web URL) and API key (an access code for the controller). This saves the connection, and if the key is missing or wrong the tool will keep asking you to connect instead of showing devices. source
  • Test the saved connection before moving on Open the text dashboard with `unifi tui` to check that the saved connection works. If it says the controller needs configuration, the saved address or API key is missing or being rejected. source
  • PUID/PGID Set PUID and PGID environment variables to match your host user permissions. source

Common questions

Does self-hosting UniFi require licenses or subscriptions?

UniFi is described as license-free, with no subscriptions and no cloud fees for native cloud management.

Should I use the legacy UniFi Network Server for a new self-hosted deployment?

No, the UniFi OS Server is the new standard for self-hosting UniFi and replaces the legacy UniFi Network Server.

What version compatibility matters when updating UniFi OS or the application?

UniFi OS updates require the application version to be tied to the console. Manual SSH updates require the compatible package.

How can I restore a backup when first logging in to the self-hosted UniFi Network webpage?

After reinstalling the app with the UniFi Installation Scripts, choose the restore from backup link at the bottom of the page on first login. The thread notes that login may still fail after the restoration.
