Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Run the Tailscale install script Use the provided install script first because it sets Tailscale into TUN mode, a virtual network interface that lets Tailscale route traffic. Without it, Tailscale may not create the tailscale0 interface, so remote access to your UniFi network can fail. source
  • Share your actual UniFi networks After installing, run the tailscale up command with --advertise-routes set to the real IP ranges on your UniFi network, such as 10.0.0.0/24. This tells Tailscale which local networks to expose, so if you skip it or mistype it, remote devices won't reach the devices on your LAN. source
  • Confirm tailscale0 is active After setup, check that a network interface named tailscale0 exists. It is the Tailscale TUN interface that carries routed traffic, and if it is missing, subnet routing and exit-node sharing may not work. source

Common questions

Can the UniFi controller run in a VM or Docker?

Users have reported running the controller on a VM and later in Docker. It behaves similarly to a hardware controller, but may lack a few options due to hardware differences.

What Tailscale settings are needed for remote access to a self-hosted UniFi network?

Use the Tailscale install script first to enable TUN mode, then run tailscale up with --advertise-routes set to the actual UniFi LAN ranges. Confirm the tailscale0 interface is active afterward.

Are there licensing limits or site caps for self-hosted UniFi?

UniFi is license-free and supports managing unlimited sites.
