Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Get a decoder running first Before installing tar1090, make sure a decoder like readsb or dump1090-fa is already installed and running. tar1090 is only the web map, so without a decoder it can open in the browser but will have no aircraft to show. source
  • Run the official installer On Debian, Ubuntu, or Raspbian, run the install script with sudo so it can place the web files and service in the right places. Using the official command helps avoid missing pieces that would stop the page from working. source
  • Back up your settings file The file /usr/local/share/tar1090/html/config.js controls the tar1090 web interface, so save a copy before changing it. If a setting breaks the page, deleting that file and rerunning the installer can restore the defaults. source

Common questions

How are main and secondary tar1090 instances named?

The main instance uses the run directory and systemd service name tar1090. Example secondary instances use names such as tar1090-combo and tar1090-978.

Can tar1090 display origin and destination route information?

ADS-B does not normally transmit origin and destination route data. The thread asks whether tar1090 can still show route information despite that limitation.

Can tar1090 use a local OpenStreetMap tile server?

No configuration method is shown in the source. It only reports that a user wanted tar1090 to use their own OpenStreetMap tile server but could not figure out how.

What might explain a tar1090 live interface or replay not working?

A broken live interface or replay can indicate that tar1090 is actively receiving data. The issue may be that it is having trouble displaying that data.

What factors are discussed for improving tar1090/RTLSDR range?

The thread discusses real-world range experiences. It specifically raises improving line-of-sight reception and antenna placement.
