NetBox is an open-source IP address management (IPAM) and data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tool for network and infrastructure engineers. It provides a cohesive data model and programmable APIs for modeling and documenting network infrastructure, from cable maps to device configurations, serving as a central source of truth for network operations.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Copy the example override file first Before starting NetBox, copy docker-compose.override.yml.example to docker-compose.override.yml and edit it to match your setup. This is where your custom settings live, so skipping it can force you to hunt down settings later. source
  • Use NetBox's web port 8000 After NetBox starts, open the web interface on port 8000, for example http://0.0.0.0:8000/ on the machine running it. If port 8000 is blocked or you use the wrong address, you will not reach the login or first-run page. source
  • Add your access address to ALLOWED_HOSTS If you plan to open NetBox from another device, a domain name, or a specific IP, include that address in the ALLOWED_HOSTS setting. Without the right entry, the site may refuse the connection even though the container is running. source

Common questions

Do I need to create docker-compose.override.yml for a Docker deployment?

Yes, copy the example override file and edit it before starting NetBox. It is where your custom settings live.

Why is NetBox unreachable from another device, domain, or IP?

Add that access address to the ALLOWED_HOSTS setting. Without the right entry, the site may refuse the connection even though the container is running.

Which port should I open to reach the NetBox web UI?

Use NetBox's web port 8000. If that port is blocked or the wrong address is used, you will not reach the login or first-run page.

Does NetBox directly configure or collect data from network devices?

No, NetBox does not interact with network nodes directly. It stores and validates intended state and exposes it programmatically to automation, monitoring, and assurance tools.

Where can I get help with NetBox?

Start with the official documentation, then use GitHub Discussions or the NetDev Community Slack.
