First-install notes
- Change the login secret first In the Docker Compose file, replace JWT_SECRET_KEY (the secret used to verify login tokens) from PLEASE_CHANGE_ME with a long random value before starting KitchenOwl. If you skip this, login tokens may be easier to forge, which could let someone access the app as a user. source
- Free port 80 or change the mapping The front service uses port 80 (a network door for web traffic) on your server, so make sure it is free or change the “80:80” line to another free host port. If port 80 is already used, your browser may not be able to reach the KitchenOwl web app. source
- Keep the data volume safe KitchenOwl stores its data in the kitchenowl_data volume, which is where your saved recipes and settings live. Keep this volume backed up because if it is deleted or corrupted, that data can be lost. source
- Required web container Install the separate KitchenOwl-Web container as well to access KitchenOwl from mobile and web. source

Common questions
What should I change in the Docker Compose file before first start?
Replace JWT_SECRET_KEY from PLEASE_CHANGE_ME with a long random value before starting KitchenOwl. If you skip this, login tokens may be easier to forge.
Why is KitchenOwl unreachable if port 80 is in use?
The front service uses port 80 on the server, so make sure it is free or change the 80:80 mapping to another free host port.
What data should I back up?
KitchenOwl stores its recipes and settings in the kitchenowl_data volume. Keep this volume backed up because deleting or corrupting it can lose that data.
How does online recipe import behave?
Importing recipes online can be inconvenient because ingredients often do not add automatically and must be typed manually.
Are recipes and shopping lists shared across users?
Yes, recipes, shopping lists, and expenses are shared between users. It also tries to suggest recipes you have not cooked in a while and adapt to the typical order you remove items from the grocery list.
