First-install notes

  • Set up the .env file first Download the production docker-compose file and the example .env file, then open .env and fill in the database address, user, password, and port. The .env file holds secrets and database settings, so if these are missing or wrong the app cannot store fitness data or start properly. source
  • Start the app with Docker Compose Run docker compose pull && docker compose up -d; Docker Compose is the tool that starts all app pieces together, and this command downloads them and runs them in the background. Without this the app is not running; when it succeeds, open http://localhost:3004 in a browser. source
  • Prepare an external database if used If you point SparkyFitness at your own PostgreSQL database, run the provided SQL to create the required database extensions and update .env with those details. PostgreSQL extensions are extra database features; skipping them can cause the app to fail when it tries to save or look up data. source
  • Pair with frontend Pair the backend with the SparkyFitness Frontend container to provide the web interface. source
