HandBrake is a tool for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs. The GUI of the application is accessed through a modern web browser (no installation or configuration needed on the client side) or via any VNC client. A fully automated mode is also available: drop files into a watch folder and let HandBrake process them without any user interaction. This is template for zocker160's container to simplify installation. You need to install ich777's nvidia driver before using this. For a complete documentation of this container, see https://github.com/jlesage/docker-handbrake#readme

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

Common questions

What NVENC usage difference can occur between the HandBrake GUI and HandBrakeCLI in Docker?

A user found the GUI used NVENC on a GTX 1650 and appeared in nvidia-smi, but the same preset in HandBrakeCLI did not show GPU usage, halved the speed, and used the CPU heavily.

Can HandBrake with Nvidia NVENC be much slower than another video app for the same encode?

One report said HandBrake with NVENC took 6 minutes 31 seconds to reduce 4K video to 1080p, while DaVinci Resolve took 41 seconds.

Do HandBrake's default Nvidia settings always maximize encode quality?

A forum discussion notes that default Nvidia settings may not maximize quality without extra parameters.

Which video container formats can HandBrake create?

HandBrake can create MP4, MKV, or WebM video files.
