Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Register Citizen in LocalSettings Add wfLoadSkin( 'Citizen' ); to LocalSettings.php (the main MediaWiki settings file) so the wiki knows to use the Citizen skin. Without this line the skin is not active and none of the Citizen options will do anything. source
  • Choose basic look and feel settings In LocalSettings.php, set $wgCitizenThemeDefault to auto, light, or dark, and turn on or off the settings that start with $wgCitizenEnable for extras like the preferences menu, command palette (a quick shortcut box), and drawer stats. Without these settings, the skin may start with defaults that hide features or use a theme you do not want. source
  • PWA may be off in subfolders If your MediaWiki is in a subfolder, the Citizen skin may turn off the PWA (Progressive Web App) service worker (the tiny background program that makes a site feel like an installed app) because subfolder paths cannot get the full scope. Without that scope, installable-app behavior may fail or behave oddly, so this is normal rather than a broken installation. source

Common questions

Do I need a server I can manage to create a self-hosted MediaWiki?

Creating a wiki implies installing MediaWiki on a server where you have access to manage it. You can use your own server or rely on a host that offers one-click installs or on-request wikis.

Where can I troubleshoot common MediaWiki issues?

The common errors and symptoms manual lists problems and solutions, including issues with image thumbnails not rendering or displaying.

How do I activate a MediaWiki skin such as Citizen?

Add wfLoadSkin('Citizen') to LocalSettings.php, the main MediaWiki settings file. Without that line, the skin is not active and its options do nothing.

Why might the Citizen skin PWA fail in a subfolder?

The skin may turn off the PWA service worker for subfolder installations because subfolder paths cannot get the full scope. That can make installable-app behavior fail or behave oddly, and it is normal rather than a broken installation.
