This Docker container runs the Backblaze Personal Backup Windows client via WINE, so that you can back up your files with the separation and portability of Docker on Linux. It starts a virtual X server and a VNC server with a web GUI, letting you configure and monitor backups from a browser.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Add your B2 keys before starting Create or copy a Backblaze B2 application key (the username and secret password the app uses to reach your cloud bucket) and enter the key ID, secret key, region, and endpoint. If these are missing or wrong, the app can't connect and your backups won't run. source
  • Point the app at the right endpoint Set the S3 endpoint to the URL for your bucket's region, such as s3.us-west-002.backblazeb2.com, and keep HTTPS enabled. This tells the app where to send backup files and helps protect them while they travel to Backblaze. source
  • Keep the secret key private Treat the Backblaze B2 application key like a password and don't share it or leave it in a public config file. If someone gets it, they could upload, read, or delete files in your backup bucket. source

Common questions

How do I interact with the Backblaze Personal Backup client in this Docker container?

The container starts a virtual X server and a VNC server with a Web GUI. That lets you interact with the Backblaze client through a web-based VNC interface.

What should I be careful about when mounting the directories I want to back up?

The container is designed to have read/write access to the data you are trying to back up. If you make a grave mistake during setup, you could delete stuff.

What if the storage I want to back up has a complex permissions setup?

If the filesystem being backed up has a complex permissions setup, you will need good knowledge of Docker to get the container set up correctly.

Does Backblaze Personal Backup support backing up NAS or home-server storage?

Backblaze runs on a Mac or Windows PC and can back up external storage. The unlimited per-device plan is tied to data physically attached.
