  • Tools & Utilities
Grafana Loki is an open-source log aggregation system. It stores labeled log streams without full-text indexing and scales horizontally for centralized logging. It is aimed at homelabbers and self-hosting operators who need low-cost, Prometheus-style log management.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • First start configuration Before first start, download the local-config.yaml file from the linked file and place it in Host Path 1 directory. source
  • Initial labeling Loki indexes labels, not full log text, so label log streams clearly before querying them. source
  • Label-based querying Loki does not full-text search logs; it groups and queries by labels, so assign useful labels to each stream. source

Common questions

Which log collection agent should I use with Loki now?

Use Grafana Alloy for log collection. Alloy replaced Promtail because Promtail is considered feature complete, and future logs collection development is in Alloy.

Will the Grafana Loki Helm chart move to a different repository?

Effective March 16, 2026, the Loki Helm chart will be forked to the grafana-community/helm-charts repository. The chart in the Loki repository will continue to be maintained only for GEL users.

What Grafana version is needed for native Loki support?

Native support in Grafana requires Grafana v6.0.

Do I have to store Loki log chunks in S3?

No. Loki stores compressed log chunks in object stores such as S3 or GCS, or locally on the filesystem.

What configuration file must be placed before first start of the Unraid Loki Docker setup?

Before first start, place the local-config.yaml file in the Host Path 1 directory.
