Prometheus is a systems and service monitoring system. It collects metrics from configured targets at given intervals, evaluates rule expressions, displays the results, and can trigger alerts if some condition is observed to be true.

Platform availability

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Start with the kube-prometheus repo Clone the kube-prometheus repository to get the Prometheus Operator install manifests. It is the documented easiest starting point; without it, you do not have the ready-made files to deploy the stack. source
  • Set a namespace before applying Kustomize Set NAMESPACE to a namespace other than default, then generate and apply the Kustomize bundle. This keeps the operator resources isolated from your apps; skipping it can leave them in the default namespace or mix them with other workloads. source
  • Match ServiceMonitor to the app port Set the ServiceMonitor endpoint to the web port and keep the Service/container port at 8080. This tells Prometheus where to scrape the example app; if it is wrong, the app runs but no metrics appear. source

Common questions

Which host address does the Docker quickstart bind Prometheus to?

The documented Docker command maps container port 9090 to 127.0.0.1:9090.

Can Prometheus accept pushed time series from batch jobs?

Yes, pushing is supported via an intermediary gateway, while collection uses an HTTP pull model.

Why should a Prometheus Operator Kustomize installation use a non-default namespace?

Set NAMESPACE to a namespace other than default so Operator resources stay isolated from your apps and do not mix with other workloads.

Why might an app scraped by a ServiceMonitor run but produce no metrics?

The ServiceMonitor endpoint must point to the app's web port while the Service/container port stays 8080; a mismatch can leave the app running without metrics.
