First-install notes

  • Fill in required env settings first Before starting, set the environment variables (settings the app reads at startup): DATABASE_URL, NEXTAUTH_URL, NEXTAUTH_SECRET, MEILI_HOST, MEILI_MASTER_KEY, NEXT_PUBLIC_USER_CONTENT_DOMAIN, and STORAGE_FOLDER. If they are missing or wrong, Linkwarden may not start, login may fail, or previews and search may break. source
  • Keep the storage folder safe STORAGE_FOLDER is where saved files and previews live, so point it at a folder you back up and keep permissions correct. If that folder is lost or inaccessible, your stored content can disappear. source
  • Run the worker process separately The worker is a separate background process that handles follow-up tasks after you save something. Deploy and run it as its own service; without it, queued work such as previews may never finish. source

Common questions

What startup settings should I check for a self-hosted Linkwarden instance?

Set DATABASE_URL, NEXTAUTH_URL, NEXTAUTH_SECRET, MEILI_HOST, MEILI_MASTER_KEY, NEXT_PUBLIC_USER_CONTENT_DOMAIN, and STORAGE_FOLDER before starting. Missing or wrong values can prevent startup, break login, or break previews and search.

Does self-hosted Linkwarden need a separate worker process?

Yes, run the worker as its own service because it handles queued follow-up tasks after saving, such as previews. Without it, those tasks may never finish.

Can self-hosted Linkwarden sync bookmarks from my browser?

Yes, you can sync browser bookmarks to Linkwarden using Floccus.

Can I save a webpage that is only visible after logging in?

Yes, you can upload a copy of the page from your browser when it is only accessible to you.
