Matrix Synapse Sliding Sync is an archived proxy for self-hosted Synapse deployments that let Matrix clients use Sliding Sync by implementing superseded Matrix specification proposal 3575; it is no longer recommended because homeservers now implement Simplified Sliding Sync natively.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Set your Matrix server URL and access token In index.js, replace homeserverUrl with your own Matrix server address and accessToken with a valid token before you start the client. If these are still placeholders, the client can't log in or talk to your server. source
  • Keep the bot.json storage file safe The example stores its saved state in a file called bot.json, so keep that file where you won't accidentally delete or overwrite it. Losing it can make the client lose its saved place and have to catch up again. source
  • Setup Requirements Requires PostgreSQL 13 or later, a database, and a stable encryption secret for access tokens. source
  • Deprecated / archived This proxy is archived and no longer recommended; use a homeserver with native Simplified Sliding Sync (MSC4186) instead. source
  • Archived Homeservers now implement Simplified Sliding Sync natively, and modern Matrix clients no longer work with this proxy. source
  • Superseded by native sliding sync The proxy is archived: it implements the superseded MSC3575, homeservers now implement simplified sliding sync (MSC4186) natively, and modern Matrix clients are no longer expected to work with this proxy. source

Common questions

Is the proxy still compatible with current Matrix clients?

No. The repository says the proxy is archived after MSC3575 was superseded by MSC4186, and modern Matrix clients are no longer expected to work with it.

Can I run the proxy in front of Conduit?

It does not work well with Conduit due to spec violations in room state for /sync. This can cause expired connections with HTTP 400s and warning log lines.

What must be preserved when backing up or migrating the database?

The SYNCV3_SECRET used to encrypt access tokens must remain the same for the lifetime of the database. It can be generated once with openssl rand -hex 32 and kept in a file such as .secret.

How can I enable native TLS on the proxy's bind address?

Set SYNCV3_TLS_CERT to a certificate file and SYNCV3_TLS_KEY to the corresponding key file. Specifying the certificate enables TLS on the bound address.
