Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes
- Install the runner as a service Run: sudo gitlab-runner install --user=gitlab-runner --working-directory=/home/gitlab-runner, then run: sudo gitlab-runner start. This tells GitLab Runner which user and folder to use, and keeps it running as a background service instead of stopping when you close the terminal. source
- Make sure the PATH includes /usr/local/bin If the runner was installed under /usr/local/bin, add that folder to PATH or install the runner in /usr/bin. PATH is the list of folders Linux checks for programs, and without this the service manager cannot find and start gitlab-runner. source

Common questions
Why does the GitLab Runner service fail to start if the binary is in /usr/local/bin?
Add /usr/local/bin to PATH or install the runner binary in /usr/bin, because the service manager uses PATH to find gitlab-runner.
Do GitLab and GitLab Runner versions need to be compatible?
Yes, check the GitLab Runner compatibility section for which GitLab CE/EE versions work with each runner version.
How can I register a runner when the GitLab server uses a self-signed certificate?
Specify the GitLab server certificate file for self-signed certificates during registration to avoid the x509: certificate signed by unknown authority error.
Should I keep runner auto-registration enabled on a self-hosted GitLab instance?
Disable the auto-registration option for security when self-hosting GitLab.
