Sonarr, formerly NZBdrone, is a self-hosted TV series manager for Usenet and BitTorrent users. It monitors Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds, coordinates download clients to fetch new episodes, and sorts and renames them into your library. It can also upgrade existing files when a better quality format becomes available, giving homelab media users a reliable way to maintain a consistent show collection.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Use the right web port Before opening Sonarr, make sure you can reach the web port it is set to use, commonly 8989 or 9898 if you enable SSL. If the port is blocked, the browser won't be able to load the Sonarr login page. source
  • Turn on login and set a password Make sure authentication is enabled and you have a username/password ready before connecting. Without login, Sonarr can be harder to secure, and you may not be able to get in if someone else finds it. source
  • Keep your API key safe Save the API key (a long password-like code Sonarr uses for computer-to-computer access), because tools and health checks use it to connect. If you lose it or let the wrong person have it, you can lose access to Sonarr's status and integrations. source

Common questions

What should I check if the Sonarr login page will not load?

Confirm that the configured web port is reachable, commonly 8989 or 9898 if SSL is enabled. You should also have authentication enabled and a username and password ready before connecting.

How do I update an existing Sonarr installation from v3 to v4?

Sonarr will automatically convert an existing Sonarr installation. It is advisable to make a backup of the v3 data first.

How do I set user and group permissions in the LinuxServer.io Sonarr container?

Use the PUID and PGID environment variables. The LinuxServer.io container provides these for easy user mappings.

Should Sonarr run as a Windows service or a system tray application?

It can be installed as a Windows Service or a System Tray Application. A system tray application is advisable if the user can remain logged in, especially when download clients use the home directory, because Windows Services cannot access mapped drives without extra configuration.
