First-install notes

  • Set PUID/PGID to your host user Set PUID/PGID (the user and group IDs the container runs as, shown as PLEX_UID/PLEX_GID in the example) to match the user that owns your media and config folders on the host; otherwise Plex may create files it can’t read later and you can get permission errors. source
  • Keep /config and /transcode outside container Map a persistent host folder to /config for Plex settings, sign-in, and library data, and /transcode for temporary video-conversion files; otherwise recreating the container can erase your setup or fill up the container disk. source
  • Expose or allow Plex port 32400 Plex’s main web interface and client communication use port 32400; make sure your firewall or router lets your devices reach it, or your Plex apps won’t be able to connect. source

Common questions

What Docker setup mistakes commonly cause permission or data-loss issues in Plex?

Set PUID and PGID to the host user that owns the media and config folders, and map persistent host folders to /config and /transcode. If these are not done, Plex can create unreadable files, lose its settings, or fill the container disk.

Which port must be reachable for Plex apps and the web interface?

Plex uses port 32400 for the main web interface and client communication. Your firewall or router must allow devices to reach it, or the Plex apps cannot connect.

What should I consider in a Plex plus torrenting setup?

The Reddit thread covers workflows involving VPNs, moving files, and renaming.

How do I get Plex to find newly added movies and shows?

Place the media in the corresponding library directory and click 'update libraries' in Plex.
