Jellyfin is a Free Software Media System that puts you in control of managing and streaming your media. It is an alternative to the proprietary Emby and Plex, to provide media from a dedicated server to end-user devices via multiple apps. Jellyfin is descended from Emby's 3.5.2 release and ported to the .NET Core framework to enable full cross-platform support. There are no strings attached, no premium licenses or features, and no hidden agendas: just a team who want to build something better and work together to achieve it.

Platform availability

Available on 6 of 9 platforms

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Set PUID/PGID to your host user IDs Before starting, set PUID/PGID to your host user and group IDs (check with `id your_user`). This prevents permission errors where Jellyfin can't read your media or save settings. source
  • Save /config and point it at your media Mount a folder for /config so Jellyfin's settings survive restarts, and mount your TV and movie folders to /data/tvshows and /data/movies. Without these, your library and preferences can disappear after an update or container rebuild. source
  • Open the web and discovery ports Expose port 8096 so you can open Jellyfin's web interface in a browser. If devices don't find Jellyfin automatically, also expose UDP ports 7359 and 1900 for network discovery. source

Common questions

Which ports should I expose when running Jellyfin in Docker?

Expose port 8096 for the web interface. If devices do not find Jellyfin automatically, also expose UDP ports 7359 and 1900 for network discovery.

Which Docker volumes should I mount to keep Jellyfin settings and media intact?

Mount /config so settings survive restarts. Mount your TV and movie folders to /data/tvshows and /data/movies so the library and preferences do not disappear after an update or container rebuild.

How can I let friends and family access a self-hosted Jellyfin server remotely?

A self-hosted VPN can provide remote access from individual devices such as a phone, tablet, or laptop. It does not provide casting.

Why might media not appear in Jellyfin after adding a library?

A common cause is that file permissions are not properly configured on the media.
