Transmission is a BitTorrent client for downloading and sharing files over the BitTorrent protocol. It offers encryption, a web interface, peer exchange, magnet links, DHT, µTP, UPnP and NAT-PMP port forwarding, webseed support, watch directories, tracker editing, and global and per-torrent speed limits. It is a good fit for anyone running a self-hosted downloader who wants a light, full-featured BitTorrent client.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Set VPN login and local network first Before you start, fill in your VPN provider, server, username/password, and LOCAL_NETWORK (your home network IP range, like 192.168.1.0/24). If these are missing or wrong, the container won’t connect to the VPN or reach your home network. source
  • Open port 9091 for the web page Port 9091 is the Transmission web page, so open it on your server and use it in a browser (for example, http://your-server-ip:9091). If it’s blocked, you can’t manage downloads. source
  • Keep your data and settings folders Point the container’s /data and /config to real folders on your machine so downloads and settings survive. If those folders are lost, deleted, or not saved, you lose your torrent list and configuration. source
