How is this calculated?

A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Mount the Docker socket into Portainer When you run the Portainer container, pass -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock so it can manage Docker containers on the host. Without that socket, Portainer has no way to inspect or control containers. source
  • Expose Portainer's web port 9000 Publish container port 9000 on your host, for example -p 9000:9000, so you can open the Portainer web interface in a browser. If you skip the port mapping, Portainer is running but you cannot connect to it. source
  • Use your own certificates If you want a trusted certificate, mount a folder such as /certs and pass the --tlscacert, --tlscert, and --tlskey flags with the file paths inside that folder. Skip those flags and Portainer will not use your custom TLS (Transport Layer Security) files, so clients may see certificate warnings or fail strict checks. source

Common questions

What mount is required for Portainer to manage Docker containers on the host?

Mount the Docker socket into the Portainer container using -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock. Without the socket, Portainer cannot inspect or control containers.

Which host port should be exposed for the Portainer web interface?

Publish container port 9000, for example with -p 9000:9000. If the port is not mapped, the web interface is not reachable in a browser.

How do I use my own SSL certificate with Portainer?

Mount a folder such as /certs and pass the --tlscacert, --tlscert, and --tlskey flags with the certificate file paths inside that folder. Without those flags, Portainer will not use the custom TLS files.

How many nodes can be covered by the free Portainer Business option?

You can get 3 free nodes of Portainer Business for as long as you want them.
