NetBird is an open-source VPN management platform built on top of WireGuard® making it easy to create secure private networks for your organization or home. The NetBird Client application (or agent) is a software that is installed on your machines. It is an entry point to you private network that makes it possible for machines to communicate with each other. Once installed and registered, a machine becomes a peer in the network and can be managed from a self-hosted or cloud daashboard. Note: This is not neccessary to install if you just want the server stack.

First-install notes

  • Use a setup key to join When you set up the NetBird background service, pass your admin-provided setup key (the code that lets a computer join), for example with netbird service install --setup-key. Without a valid key, the client can't register itself and will not connect to your private network. source
  • If self-hosting, create owner account If you are running your own NetBird server, create the owner account with an email and password during the initial setup. Until this is done, the instance won't let you manage devices or create setup keys for other computers. source
  • If self-hosting, set domain/email In the setup.env config file, put your real NetBird domain and a valid Let's Encrypt (free HTTPS certificate) email before starting the service. Missing or wrong values can break HTTPS and make the web setup page or login inaccessible. source
