Kanboard is a lightweight, open-source project management application built around the Kanban method. It provides boards, lists, and cards for planning, tracking, and visualizing work items. The app suits small teams, developers, and self-hosters who need a simple task tracker. It is useful as a low-maintenance alternative to heavier project-management platforms.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install the web server and PHP On Debian, install Apache (the web server) and the listed PHP packages, then enable Apache so it starts automatically after reboot. Without these, Kanboard has no place to run and you will not see the app in a browser. source
  • Quick local test before full setup You can unzip Kanboard, run php -S localhost:8000, and open http://localhost:8000 to check it in a browser. This lets you verify Kanboard works before configuring a full web server, but it only works from the same machine. source
  • Start Apache automatically on Windows On Windows, go to the Apache bin folder and run httpd.exe -k install to make Apache a Windows service. This keeps the web server running in the background, which is important for Kanboard to stay available. source
