First-install notes
- Open port 9000 and mount Docker socket Run the Portainer container with -p 9000:9000 and -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock so the web UI is reachable and it can manage Docker. Missing the port blocks browser access, and missing the socket means it cannot see your containers. source
- Use TLS flags for remote Docker If Docker is remote or requires TLS, mount your certificate folder and pass --tlsverify, --tlscacert, --tlscert, and --tlskey. Without the right certificate paths, the connection can fail with certificate or authentication errors. source
- Hide noisy containers with labels Add a label to containers you do not want shown, then start Portainer with -l for that label to hide them in the UI. This is optional, but it keeps service containers from cluttering the dashboard. source

Common questions
When should a self-hoster run Portainer Agent?
It is useful when Docker is running on multiple machines and you want to manage all Docker instances from a single Portainer host.
What basic settings are needed so the Portainer web UI can manage a local Docker host?
Expose port 9000 and mount /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock. The port makes the UI reachable and the socket lets Portainer see Docker containers.
How can I hide service containers from the Portainer dashboard?
Add a label to the containers you do not want shown, then start Portainer with that same label. This hides them from the dashboard.
