Nextcloud is a self-hosted, open-source file and content collaboration platform that stores, syncs, and shares your files so you can access them from any desktop or mobile device. You run it on a server of your choice — at home, in a data center, or with a hosting provider — keeping your data private and connected to existing storage such as an office FTP drive, a Dropbox, or a home NAS. It serves as a private alternative to public cloud services for individuals and organizations.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Start the Nextcloud all-in-one master container Install Docker (a container manager), then start the master container with port 8080 open for the setup page and APACHE_PORT (the web-site port, for example 11000) open. The master container saves its settings in a Docker volume (a saved folder managed by Docker), so don't delete it or you'll lose the configuration. source
  • Manual install: download files and launch containers Clone (download) the all-in-one files, go into the manual-install folder, and run `sudo docker compose up` to start the containers that run Nextcloud. If you skip this step, the app won't start because the containers are still stopped. source
  • If using Docker Rootless, allow login at boot If you are using Docker Rootless (running Docker as your normal user instead of root), run `loginctl enable-linger USERNAME` with your username. This keeps your Docker-related services running after a reboot, so Nextcloud can come back automatically. source
  • User mappings Set PUID and PGID environment variables to map container file ownership to your host user and group. source

Common questions

Which ports should be opened when starting Nextcloud all-in-one with Docker?

Open port 8080 for the setup page. Also open APACHE_PORT, which is the web-site port, for example 11000.

Why do Nextcloud all-in-one containers stay stopped after a manual install?

You need to clone the all-in-one files, go into the manual-install folder, and run sudo docker compose up. If you skip this step, the containers remain stopped.

How can I keep a Docker Rootless Nextcloud install running after a reboot?

Run loginctl enable-linger with your username. This keeps your Docker-related services running after a reboot so Nextcloud can start automatically.
