First-install notes

  • Prepare folders and run first install From the FreshRSS folder, run ./cli/prepare.php, then ./cli/do-install.php with your database (where FreshRSS saves feeds and settings), base URL (your website address), and default username. This creates the needed data folders and initial settings; without it, FreshRSS has nowhere to store data. source
  • Set base URL and create the login user Use a reachable base URL (the website address people type) for --base-url, and remember do-install.php does not create the default user; run ./cli/create-user.php for the account you will log in with. A wrong base URL or missing user can break mobile APIs, favicons, push, and first login. source
  • Enable Apache modules if using Apache If you serve FreshRSS with Apache, install Apache and enable the headers, expires, rewrite (URL rewriting), and ssl (HTTPS) modules. These support proper links and HTTPS; missing them can make pages, login, or links fail. source

Common questions

In a command-line FreshRSS install, what must be done after running do-install.php?

Run create-user.php to create the login user, because do-install.php does not create the default user. Use a reachable base URL, since a wrong base URL or missing user can break mobile APIs, favicons, push, and first login.

Which Apache modules should be enabled when serving FreshRSS with Apache?

Enable the headers, expires, rewrite, and ssl modules. Missing them can make pages, login, or links fail.

Why can FreshRSS updates break in a containerized Postgres setup?

FreshRSS updates can break because of Postgres collation version mismatches in the container. Users report this issue occurring on nearly every update.

How can I troubleshoot a feed that FreshRSS cannot fetch?

Use cURL to try the feed URL with different user agents. Start from the same server as FreshRSS, then test other IPs if the responses differ, since IP-based filtering can be the cause.
