First-install notes

  • Run hostd config before starting it Run the interactive hostd config wizard once before you start hostd. It sets up your wallet seed and admin password, so if you skip it your host has no wallet or web-interface login. source
  • Save the wallet seed and password Write down the wallet seed and admin password the wizard gives you and keep them safe. If you lose them or your config folder is deleted, you may not be able to recover the wallet or access the web interface. source
  • Start hostd after configuring it After the wizard is done, start and enable the hostd service, for example with sudo systemctl enable --now hostd on Linux. That starts it now and makes it come back automatically after a reboot, so your storage host keeps working. source

Common questions

What should I do if my Sia host’s IP address changes?

Reannounce the host whenever the IP changes; in some cases this can be needed every three days. Using a DDNS address makes locating the host in Siastats and Siacentral easier.

Can I move a Sia host’s stored data to a different folder?

Add the new storage folder in the Host tab and wait until it appears in Total Storage. Then remove the old folder, and Sia should move stored data from the old folder to the new one.

What credentials should I save when configuring hostd?

The hostd configuration wizard creates a wallet seed and an admin password. Save both, because losing them or deleting the config folder can prevent wallet recovery or web-interface access.

Is there a tool for checking common initial Sia host problems?
